What did a traditional marketplace look like? In Guan Zi, it said, “The market should be set up in a squared space, like building up a well.” In the glorious age of Tang Dynasty, there were 108 residential blocks in Chang’an city for the citizens to live. Besides, there were two markets in the eastern and the western city for the business. “Young dandy visited the West market, riding a white horse on the silver saddle happily.” The poem reveals the glory of the city at that time. With the time passing by, the Chang’an was no longer existed. And with the spirit of Chang’an disappearing, only Xi’an left.
The prosperous Chang’an was disappeared, but the traditional lifestyle went on till now. People were doing trade along the lanes and relaxing at the door of their houses. The relationship between “home” and “city” were growing since then. There in the city, you can find the wisdom of life. It is the everyday life of the most ordinary downtown, noisy but vigorous, evolving freely.
The urban memories are just in the very ordinary life.
